This is Sara's book, which left Connecticut today for West Virginia! My page that I added is the blue & white flowered one (on one side) and the tan on the other, with all the ribbons flowing out to match Sara's cover. What a wonderful book! Sara, I think you will be very happy to receive this back home again. I am done now with my contributions, but will enjoy the rest of the uploads and wait for Sue & Dawn's additions to my book. (as you can!) Then it will return home to me! This has been a great RR, dispite any difficulties we faced. We overcame them!

I chose Kindness and Wrath for my virtue and sin. I just love the vintage postacard image of the fire breathing woman with the big hair - talk about a dangerous job!

Lenna in Kyla's Ladies of the Sea

This is the first bit of art work I have done since moving! It really was great to sit in my studio although everything is still in boxes. I had packed a few things in advance in a tote bag and worked out of that, enjoying my new space. Kyla's book had 5 pages left in it, so I wrote her and asked her if it was OK that I did 2 pages : )) Still plenty of room for Sara & Joyce! I love the way kyla created the base pages for us to work on, and - her theme of "ladies of the sea" came so easily to me. Both of my pages use Alpha Stamp Fabric images from the Mermaids #2 sheet (scroll down once you get there) - yummy! On the more colorful page below I glued paper to the fabric and also used a small transparency of a photo of water that the mermaid is swimming out of . . . I hope you like these pages, Kyla! Hi everyone, thought I would pop in and say that I am following your progress with your books... so sorry I had to drop out but I had my best friend pass away and I felt like I couldn't cope with any creativity at the time and luckily I did drop out because my mum had a heartattack a month or so ago and had to have triple by-pass....
so there is no way I could have continued on with any of these gorgeous books...
but like I said, they are just gorgeous - well done!

Kyla - your book is absolutely beautiful. I had a lot of fun creating my maiden. Using a fun vintage postcard image, I made her into a mermaid and gave her lots of seashells and shiny things to swim among. I hope you like her.

I have photos of the page I created for Linda's book along with some additional photos of her whole book! Linda's sign-in spools and her instructions have been re-united with her book, yay! To the right, is the front of the page I did - click on it for more detail. I used part of the large paper and fabric collage I created in July for the front of this page. Then I added some hand stitching & beading, and stamped a favorite Claudia Rose stamp; "It's the little things." -This is a little book! : )

Here to the left is the back of my page. I mixed paper with fabric and added a little stamping with Fabrico/VersaCraft ink in a magenta color.

Dawn in Michelle's Book - Dance

Michell's book is turning into a wonderful Dance themed book. Since Michelle indicated in her instructions that she likes texture, I added a real tulle tutu to the ballerine image that I used for my page. I also added some vintage silver irridescent trim (doesn't show up well in the photo unfortunately) and a fun danglie on the side. The book headed out priority mail to Lenna today!

First is the back of my page - not too fancy but I like that it is simple.

This is the front of may page - the image is from an old "Etude" music magazine, vintage 1950's. I saturated the image in blue on photoshop then printed on fabric. I hope you like it Michelle!

I recently worked in Sue Simpson's book as part of this RR and had a wonderful time. Here's Sue's cover; I added a small bit of lace trim with a safety pin she had already put on the cover . . . click on any photo for more detail.

My sign in tag (sue asked us to choose a stencil) was the letter E for LEnna! My page on the right is fabric based with bits of paper from an inspirational scrapbook page glued on.

Dawn in Linda's Book - Anything Goes

Linda's book was a bit of a challenge for me because of the size. It is just 4 x 5", which doesn't seem so small but . . . . I love her theme - Vintage/Grungy/Anything Goes - and I had so many ideas that I wanted a larger space to work in!

I have recently begun needle felting and so for this page I completed a needle felted piece with a vintage postcard image reduced and printed on fabric. I then hand beaded, added some vintage pearl buttons and trimmed the edge with ribbon and metallic thread. The little roses are vintage plastic embellishments.

I'll be mailing this book off to Lenna today. Linda's sign in tags are a bit behind and hopefully they will be able to catch up to the book soon. I haven't received them yet but when I do will mail them off with the next book.

Dawn has created a wonderful book she's named 'Travelers' that I got to work in recently. Her cover is made up of embroidered velvets and has a green tassel with bells that really ring. I scanned her book with the added pages inside - click on any picture for more detail. Here's Dawn's cover - don't you just want to pick it up and hold it? : ^ ) Sara, you can do that soon! I will be sending it to you tomorrow.

On the inside of her book, Dawn made a wonderful sign-in page on the inside cover. She added buttons along the top for all of us to tie the tags that we personalized as a sign-in for her book. That's me, in California in 1979, on my tag. The buttons to hold the tags are a great idea, Dawn! Here's a peek with tags by Dawn, Robyn & me . . . . that's Dawn's page on the right.

Below right, you'll see my page, before I tied it in to Dawn's book with the 3 rings she provided - I used twill tape for ties:

My page is based on a true story of my cat Zanzibar driving across the country from California to Connecticut - with us (my ex-husband & me)- not by herself!! She really was a traveler as she did this more than once! All three photos I used were from one of her cross-country trips with us. That's her in the truck, sitting on the divider between the front seats. Now, I don't know if she REALLY wished it would rain, like it says on the back of the page . . . that's my creative license ; ^ ) I added the beaded trim as it was reminiscent of those days (1979!)

So sorry for my absence but I think things are getting in order now and I'll have more time for the important stuff - ART

I also received Michelle's Dance book and Linda's Vintage/anything goes book. The work in these two books is amazing - you guys are so creative and talented and I feel so honored to be in this group of artists. I'm anxious to get my finished book back but I know it will be quite some time for it to travel through it's journey with you all.

I will be mailing Sue's book on to Robyn this week - hopefully I'll get to the post office tomorrow.

EDIT - I am now mailing to Lenna, and will still be mailing the book tomorrow.

I can't wait to get started on the next two books that I have.

Robyn's Goddess Book - added to!

I really enjoyed working in Robyn's Goddess theme book. It is a very soft book that has a definite Vintage feeling. To review what Robyn's Cover and page look like - just jump to this post: goddess-is-on-its-way!
Here are scans of what I added to her book. Below, my page is added on the right. Click on the photos for more details:

In the next scan below the first one, the page is flipped over - it's on the left now. I used one of my Grandmother's Handkercheifs as a base for this page. That is her initial "B" for Betty! I sprayed the handkercheif with a lettuce green Adirondack color wash and used my heat gun to set it. Both pages use Transparencies from Alpha Stamps to illustrate Robyn's Goddess theme. I used images from the Pre-Raphaelite Women sheet for both sides of the page and attached them in 2 different ways. On the yellow page I sewed the transparency on. The red lace paper on this page is from Alpha Stamps too.

For the green handkercheif page I glued the transparency on with a clear drying tacky glue, before spraying with the color wash. On both pages I stamped Goddess related sayings with versaCraft ink which can be heat set. I sewed a few beads and ribbons on by hand and machine stitched both pages together with a little bit of batting in-between! I added a strip of fabric spray dyed to match my page with my name stamped on one side and "passion counts" on the other - as passion is the theme of my own book. This was Robyn's idea which I like alot. Then I attached my sign-in to the inside back cover with one of the little safety pins Robyn left there for us!

What do you get when your husband and son go out of town for the weekend??

Tons of fun, tons of fabric, a bit of cute, a bit of lace, a bit of paint and anything else I could get my hands on. By the time it came to do my actual page I was almost out of steam. Here is my book. The sign in letters will go in the inside pocket. I am enclosing stencils with the letters

I finally got my book into the post today. Here are some photos..

above is the front cover. I put a vintage ribbon tie to close the book. This is my first attempt at printing on fabric. I used an old linen pillow case to print on - there are age rust marks on it which gives a real old feel

above is the inside of the cover. I pinned an instruction tag. The right hand side is my first page. vintage fabric as a background and vintage lace edge.

below is the back of the first page and the 'sign in' page. I didn't do a real sign in page but left it up to each person to add a little something if they wish - that represents their own theme

I've been working away on my Travelers book and I have it ready to go in the mail. I've gone for a crazy quilt look with velvets, textured fabrics, embellishments and hand embroidery. I included some vintage pieces from my stash. This book was so much fun to create and I can't wait to work in everyone else's book as they travel to me. Here's a preview of my book so far . . .
The front cover -

The inside cover - both front and back insides are the same. As the method of sign in, I ask that each person decorate a tag that I have provided and tie to one of the buttons with coordinating ribbon or fiber -

This is my page. The embroidered piece is from my stash, it is all hand done, although I didn't do it - wouldn't have the patience for something this detailed. You can see a bit of the gold rings in the center spine of the book. I ask that you attach ribbon or fibers to your pages and just tie them into the 3 rings in the center to hold them in the book.
I will send complete instructions along with my book. I hope that everyone will feel free to be creative. My opinion is that if artists are left to create within their own guidelines the art will truly reflect the artist and not only be more enjoyable to create, but more enjoyable to admire.

Hi all! Dawn, sorry it took me a while to respond to your query on how we were all doing . . . I was busy thinking about what to do for the inside of my book before sending it off. I started by finishing the cover! I added a bit of trim I had painted for another project to the cover's edge and I also added a velvet rose/leaf. I glued these things on. Next, I looked around my studio and gathered a few things to create a textural, passionate page! I ended up making 2 pages because I wanted to try out my idea for how I am going to put all the pages together when the book returns home. I've cut out denim "spines" to use to connect two pages. Later I will sew through ALL the denim pieces connecting two pages and through the denim piece on the cover. You just have to create one page (i'm including a template) stash it in the book loosely, and I will fix it up when it comes home. See below - click on any photo for more detail:

For texture (my sub-theme) I used cordoroy, velvet, a piece of knitting my mother did, transparencies, silk, metal and buttons. For my passion theme, on the first page I concentrated on passionate kissing, following your heart and I added a scan of my husband & my wedding rings/hands. For page two, I used image transfers and inkjet prints of photos onto fabric that express my love and passion for walking outside. I will wrap this book up in a Priority envelope and mail it to Sara in Tennesee tomorrow, march 31st - wow! We're off! : ) Lenna

How's Everyone Doing?

How are the journals coming along? I'm working on mine today and am really happy with how it is turning out so far - it will be ready for mailing on or before April 1st. Isn't Lenna's fabulous? Just love the theme and colors.

Remember that this first part of doing your own cover, sign in page and journal page will be the most time consuming of all. After this you'll be doing one page a month in someone else's fabric journal.

I scored on some great upholstery fabric samples at a local store here in Portland, OR. It is a store where people and companies donate leftover stuff that is then sorted, priced and sold for art or whatever. I just love going there and never know what I am going to find. Well . . . . . last week I went in and there were two large laundry bins FULL of high quality upholstery samples - all you could stuff in a plastic grocery bag for $3.00!!! I bought a full bag and most are perfect sizes for small fabric projects like these journals, ATCs, etc. I was so excited to find these and they really inspired me to get my journal started.

My theme is Travelers and I'm going for a "crazy quilt" look. I'll post some pictures soon.

Lenna's RR Fabric Book

Hello from Lenna! I am a fabric and mixed media artist and instructor living in Connecticut where we still have a foot of snow on the ground March 19th! I have been thinking about my fabric book for Dawn's RR for a while now and finally fleshed out some of my ideas yesterday. I decided on a theme of Passion, with a sub-theme of Texture - it should be fun to work in!! It is 5-1/2" x 7-1/2"in size.

I have participated in (or hosted) Fabric Book RRs and fabric page swaps before and so I am really looking forward to being involved in this process again. From taking part in Dawn's Oh So Charming Swap I know that she is a very organized and enthusiastic hostess - yay! This will be great. I'm glad I'm here in this group Dawn has organized through art-e-zine. I just wrote an article about RRs for art-e-zine, you'll find it published on the art-e-zine site. Gillian did a great job with it!

I am going to share my cover which is not quite done, but almost. It is one-piece, with a denim "binding" piece in the middle - I am recycling my husband's old jeans. : ) In the past I have done wrap covers, eyelets & ribbons, and accordion style fabric books . . . . and so instead, this book is going to have additional strips of denim (just like the cover) that I will use to attach all your finished pages to. Then I will sew through all the denim strips and tie them off on the outside of the cover. I got the idea from the book, Fabric Art Journals by Pam Sussman. There is a book she makes in there that's something like this. When I ship my book off I will send a template for the size your pages will need to be, and I will sew all the pages together with the denim strips when my book comes back home to me. Click on the photos below for more detail.

This shows my sign in page on the inside front cover . . . . I settled on these metal rimmed tags as they just seemed to be the best thing for this book. You could do ATCs or tags or fabric squares, or even just have everyone write their name on your cover or page - which you are also welcome to do in this book. But I liked pinning these tags here and letting you decide whether you'd pin the tag back in place or pin it to your page - it's your choice! The back pocket on the inside back cover has a gel medium image transfer from a photo I took, and inside the pocket I wrote some notes to you about my book. There are also lots of blank cards for you to write notes to me (!) if you wish, about creating in my book.

The actual fabric page to go inside I still need to do, and I may add some velvet leaves to the cover. The image on the front is a fabric collage sheet image from Alpha Stamps called "The Balcony". Any feedback is welcome!

Each of the nine participants are invited to post about their fabric books and themselves as they create their own and contribute pages to the others. Our first mailing date is April 1st - meaning that each participant will mail out their books on or before April 1st. Once the books are received by the next player, hopefully there will be photos and information posted about each book.

Most of all we are here to have fun and make some great fabric art!

I'm Dawn Sellers and I will be the hostess of the round robin. Wrangling everyone together and gently reminding of the mailing times. I have been doing all kinds of artsy crafty things my whole life. I enjoy all the wonderful artists that I meet through projects like this and love to swap art with others. I do have a work life where I credential employed physicians for a large metropolitan health system in Portland, Oregon. I own an antique store with my husband (he runs it most of the time) where I work on Saturdays and Mondays, in Hillsboro, Oregon. I really love to make jewelry, scrapbook and alter junk. My time is really limited so I do best with portable, small and quick to finish projects. I always have several "irons in the fire" as my mom always tells me.

Hi everyone - my name is Robyn and I have been blogging for over 3 years now. Just beware, my blog is a place where I get that chatter out of my head, so sometimes i may appear a little demented.

I have never created a fabric book as such but have been playing with fabrics for many years. And I love it! I am trying my hand at mixed media at the moment, just for fun really.. I also make art dolls/spirit dolls from cloth.

I have started my cover & first page of the Goddess fabric book. I just found an image I like and printed it off on my printer. My printer is an inkjet and I don't think the images are waterproof...

I am really looking forward to getting to know each of you while we create & play together.
